Tai Chi is a Chinese martial art that is practiced for both health and self defense. It is sometimes referred to as meditation in motion. Tai Chi uses slow, soft, flowing movements to create a calm tranquil mind. Constant practice improves balance, muscle tone, circulation and health. Some studies indicate that Tai Chi helps alleviate hypertension, arthritis, and anemia. It helps develop both mental and physical flexibility. In persons over 70, Tai Chi improves balance therefore reducing the risk of falls. Since the movements are practiced slowly, strength is not a factor.

The Tai Chi program at the Golden Pyramid is divided into several levels. The Wu Tai Chi forms are taught. A beginner learns a simple slow form. The student learns how to step correctly and move the hands correctly. After learning this form, correct breathing techniques are applied along with examples of self defense. At the intermediate level students begin to learn additional forms, which challenge the balance and increase flexibility. Along with hand forms both straight sword and saber are taught. Two person forms and push hands help increase awareness and sensitivity. |
